![]() ![]() John Simm does a fine job, as expected, in the title role and is ably supported by Richie Campbell as DS Branson, the rest of the cast are pretty decent too. It can't be denied it was more than a little far-fetched but that didn't bother me as it moved at a good pace and the tension was kept high once we learnt where the missing man is. As the story continues there are many twists and turns and further deaths before the case is solved. We learn what has happened to the man quite early on, without going into details, this raises the tension considerably. The only people who might know anything appears to be the best man he missed the night out because his plane was stuck in Jersey, or the missing man's fianceé. DS Glenn Branson asks DSI Grace to help with this unusual case. Later the van they were travelling in crashes leaving three of them dead and a fourth dying. As this opening episode gets underway a group of men are enjoying a stag night in Brighton. This has led to him being put in charge of the cold case unit. ![]() As is often the case in such series he has his problems his wife disappeared some years before and his superiors find him a liability after he consulted a medium in a case. ![]() This series is centred on Detective Superintendent Roy Grace. ![]()

Their parents’ relief quickly turned to suspicion as it became clear the sisters didn’t just look different they now wielded the ability to force people to do their bidding. ![]() They returned, transformed, a month later, with shocking white hair and their beautiful blue eyes now dark. Seven years ago, Iris Hollow and her two older sisters disappeared from the streets of Edinburgh. ![]() ![]() She had ranged off on her own, but he found her on a hill overlooking the river that wound past the palace and into the village through the mill. Watkins, told him he’d seen enough for one day, and headed after Ilsa. He wondered again why Edwards was so keen to sell the estate. Surely a Scottish earl should hold property in Scotland. He knew the dukedom came with a Scottish title: Earl of Crieff. Although nothing groundbreaking happens in terms of story, the restraint and maturity and realism, the lack of giant explosions and space wars, is what makes this so enjoyable. ![]() And Superman is written true to his Golden Age self, pure-hearted and saving the day. Clark himself is so very likable and human: naive, erroneous, shy, lost. I yearned for the down home and loving parents that are Jonathan and Martha Kent and all the corny platitudes they say. The writing is tender, nostalgic, and simple. Jeph Loeb tells the tale of Superman's coming of age and coming into his own, skipping Kryptonian lore and going right to Kansas. While this isn't the first Superman retelling, it's certainly one of the greatest. This is in my top two with All Star Superman. Why did I wait so many years to read this? Seriously. She believes the writer who is concerned about what constitutes a well-constructed sentence is on the right path. She reminds the reader that words are the "raw material out of which literature is crafted." Reading Like a Writer is a writing guide by American writer Francine Prose, published in 2006. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A-HA! This was great historical fiction! (The novel was a national bestseller in Canada and was longlisted for the 2008 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.) When I heard McKay had another book being released, I was so excited and couldn't wait to immerse myself in it. In 2006, I read The Birth House by Ami McKay. But then, through a few excellent selections by my in-person book group, I began to really love historical fiction and also began to actively seek it out when making my reading choices. Based on past reading experiences, I had previously avoided this area of literature thinking it too dry or, even worse, too gushy and unrealistically romantic. Historical fiction is a genre with which I am developing a fuller and more positive relationship. ![]() A novel about a girl who struggles for her independence in the tenements of lower Manhattan in 1871 ![]() ![]() Speaking of looking at how the texts and illustrations work together, the snatch of text I share below is an example of how Aaron Reynolds uses dialogue to show us what the characters are thinking and feeling but at the same time, Peter Brown uses the illustrations to hit the message home. What a perfect opportunity to compare and contrast different texts for mood and also to look closely at how illustrations work with the text to contribute to the mood of a story. With older students, you could definitely tie this to Tell-Tale Heart. My elementary school music teacher sang The Cat Came Back With Us so it would be cool to connect the song and this book with younger students. As I was reading, I thought of Edgar Allan Poe's Tell-Tale Heart and the song The Cat Came Back. What I Think: Happy Friday the 13th! What a perfect day to celebrate Creepy Pair of Underwear!
